Terrific Tuesday (3/13/18)

Wednesday was Diamond Head day!  We got to the trailhead early so we could hike before lunch and not be rushed for Pearl Harbor in the afternoon.  Looks like one of these boys was more excited than the other one!
Consulting the map, of course.

And we're off!  We started hiking around 8:40 and already there were this many people!
The view the whole way up is so pretty.  Cloudy, kind of rainy day, but still so pretty.  The rain was refreshing as we hiked, I was so grateful that it wasn't hot!
The first set of stairs.  Luke's tired face and Josh's big smile -- very typical personalities for this time of day and this type of activity.
They were so excited to get into that 230' tunnel! (Not me...I got a little claustrophobic in there, the dark freaked me out and I was already kind of out of breath from the stairs.  Lets just say that this tunnel was not my favorite part of the hike.)
Running!
This is taken from the bottom of the 99 steps.
They just trucked right up them, like no big deal.
I love the worn steps and the elevation (it seemed so high and it was 703' ha ha ha)
The spiral stair case was a big hit!
Luke was smart, he hung onto the handrail pretty much the whole way. So did I, actually!
Daylight view from the bunker.
They both loved thinking about being at war and guarding the island from this tiny little slot in the mountain.

Look at that water!

Love these handsome boys

We saw a real submarine out in the ocean. That was cool, something I'd never seen before.

See the submarine in the top left kind of?

The view from the top is SO worth the stairs!
Josh snuck a selfie at the top.  Love the brother arm pose.

See kids, that's the ocean.

Mike brought 4 Honolulu Cookies to the top for a treat!  Lets just say Luke didn't have to be reminded that we had cookies with us!

Just taking a break.

The other side of the top.

I love that Josh puts his arm around Luke in pictures.

What a city!

I think it's so cute that he could barely see over the wall.

The view from the top was breathtaking.  Little cloudy, but still stunning.

What a panoramic view!
Selfie time!

Loving the view!

We went to Pearl Harbor to show the kids some real history. :)

Look Gramma Harley, it's your birthday!

We went to the Pacific Aviation Museum, which was incredible to see through the kids' eyes.  This mural was in the entrance.

Cool to see Josh for scale next to these torpedoes.
The boys did a simulation flight at the museum...Luke said it was his favorite part of the museum.

Luke and Mike went to the hangars to see to the real planes, but Josh and I went back to the car because he had something horribly painful in his eye.  Luke LOVED seeing these planes.  See the magnet he's holding? It matches the plane and was given to him by a museum guy.

Love the thumbs up pose.

He knows all about these planes, he's pretty into them right now.

And before we knew it, we had watched the mandatory movie and taken the boat ride to the monument.

We had the audio tour, which was pretty cool!  The boys were taking in all the stops.

Still really touching to see the actual wreckage.

So many names of the fallen.

The monument is so thoughtfully designed, which I know understand after listening to the audio tour.
Luke really taking in the details.

I wonder what the kids thought.

This is the model of the USS Arizona back at the main land.

We came back to the hotel for dinner and to enjoy the beach at night.

We ate at the Tropics restaurant a lot. We loved it!

Our beach was beautiful, they lit it up at night!

Goof balls
My little tree hugger

The perfect palm trees!

Not sure why Josh wanted to bury his feet, but it's always a fun game.

The shadows of the palm trees were so cool, swaying in the breeze.

We needed the night with a fantastic competition of who can do the coolest jump into the pool. It was a tie.
